This Refund Policy explains how refunds work for donations made through websites powered by Bloom, operated by Bloom One LLC. It forms part of our Terms of Service.
1. Summary
When you donate through a Bloom-powered website, you are giving to the nonprofit organization that operates that website, not to Bloom. That organization is the merchant of record, the funds settle into its own payment account, and the organization — not Bloom — sets the refund policy that applies to your donation.
Donations are intended as final gifts, and many organizations on Bloom operate a strict no-refund policy. Others will refund in cases of duplicate charges, obvious errors such as a wrong amount or an extra zero, or a charge made after a recurring donation was cancelled. To find the policy that applies to you, read the Terms page on the website where you gave — it is linked in that site's footer, and it governs your donation.
Two exceptions are handled the same way everywhere: a payment method used without its owner's authorization, and a refund required by law. Contact us and we will act on those regardless of the organization's general policy.
2. Requesting a refund
Contact the organization you donated to first — its contact details are on the website where you gave, and on your receipt. If you cannot reach them, or the donation was unauthorized, email us at [email protected] and we will help.
Please reach out within 60 days of the transaction. Include the donor name, the approximate date and amount, and the organization you gave to. Refunds requested after 60 days may not be possible: payment processors limit how far back a transaction can be reversed, and the organization may already have spent the funds on the animals in its care.
3. Who issues the refund
Because the organization is the merchant of record, the refund is issued from the organization's own Stripe or PayPal account, and the decision to grant it is the organization's to make. Bloom cannot refund a donation on its own — we do not hold the funds and we do not overrule an organization's policy. What we can do is locate the transaction, put your request in front of the organization, and process the refund through the platform once the organization approves it.
In cases of confirmed fraud or unauthorized card use, we will act quickly and work with the organization and the payment processor to reverse the charge.
4. How long it takes
How quickly an organization responds to a refund request is up to that organization. Once a refund has been approved and submitted, though, the timing is out of everyone's hands: the payment processor returns the funds to the original payment method, and card refunds typically appear within 5–10 business days depending on your bank or card issuer. Bank transfers (ACH) and PayPal balance refunds can take slightly longer. Refunds always go back to the original payment method — they cannot be redirected to a different card or account.
5. Recurring donations
Cancelling a recurring donation and refunding a charge are two different things. Cancelling stops all future charges but does not reverse charges that have already been processed.
You can cancel a recurring donation at any time, without contacting anyone, from your donor account on the organization's website at /account/recurring. A link appears in every donation receipt. Cancellation takes effect immediately.
If you cancelled and were charged anyway, that charge is refundable — contact us and we will reverse it. Full recurring donation terms are in section 4 of our Terms.
6. Fees and platform tips
Where an organization does refund a donation, the amount you were charged is returned in full, including any processing fee you chose to cover.
Optional tips to Bloom work differently, because that money is ours rather than the organization's. We will refund a platform tip on request, whatever the organization decides about the donation itself — so if you meant to give $50 and accidentally tipped $50 on top, we can return the tip even where the gift is final.
7. Before you file a chargeback
If something looks wrong on your statement, please contact us before disputing the charge with your bank. Donations often appear under the organization's name rather than a name you recognize, and a quick email usually resolves it.
Chargebacks take money directly from a small nonprofit and add a fee on top of the reversed amount. We will almost always refund a legitimate request faster than a dispute would resolve. If your card really was used without your permission, do contact your bank — and tell us too, so we can help shut the fraud down.
